I have a child in first grade and another starting kindergarten next year, so I am not watching these decisions from a distance. I am raising my kids inside the results.
I have spent my career helping organizations cut through complexity to reach decisions built on real numbers. When I look at how our district is being run, I see short-term fixes covering long-term problems. Our children will grow up in the district these choices build, and I want a board thinking about the next twelve years, not just the next budget cycle.
I did not come to this from politics. I came to it from a career spent making sense of complicated things, and from a house with two daughters growing up in Fort Bend schools.
I started out in restaurant operations, long hours and thin margins, where you learn fast that good intentions do not count for much if the numbers do not work. Over time I moved into finance, and eventually into leading a company whose whole job is taking scattered information and turning it into one clear picture people can act on. I have watched this district make big financial decisions for years and wondered who was really keeping track. That is the discipline this board has been missing.
What turned my questions into a decision was a conversation at a birthday party a few months ago. A dad I have known for years told me what the recent school closures had been like for families, how they came wanting to be heard and kept being told there was no time. We were not affected by those closures, but friends of ours were, and it was hard on them and their kids. Standing there, I realized I did not want to be someone who noticed and moved on.
My family has been in Fort Bend since 2015. I coached my daughter's soccer team last year, and we are the parents at the class parties and the school events. I am not running because I have all the answers. I am running because I have two kids growing up in this district, a career built on honest numbers and clear decisions, and a belief that families deserve both from the people they elect.
Plan for the challenges we can already see coming, instead of patching recurring gaps with one-time money. Families should be able to trust that their schools are on stable ground, not bracing for the next surprise.
Every family that leaves makes the next year harder for the ones who stay. We keep them here by being a district they choose, not one they leave. That means schools worth choosing in every neighborhood, not just some.
Families should see a decision coming and have a real voice before the vote, not read about it after. Too often the people most affected are the last to know. I want to change that.
I will not pretend to have a ready answer for every issue in a district this size. What I can promise is how I will work. I will ask the right questions, bring the people closest to each problem to the table, put the real numbers and real options in front of families early, and listen before decisions instead of explaining after them. Then I will make the call and own it.
